It is important to know who has access to the equipment that you are planning on getting rid of so you know that the data that needs deleting is done.  It is also important because you want to know who is looking at the information that you are disposing of.  You want to make sure that the information is in the right hands.

According to Tech Republic, “Establish clear guidelines for who should have access to any equipment in need of secure disposal and track a “chain of custody” so you’ll be better able to ensure nobody who shouldn’t have access to it before disposal won’t get his or her hands on it.”
